Intro

Whether or not you’ve heard of Bijou [pronounced ‘bee-zhoo’], one thing is for sure. This retail and residential development is one of the city’s well-hidden gems. Thankfully, well-hidden doesn’t mean out-of-reach, for the mall is located right across from Pasir Panjang MRT!

Now, if you’re wondering why “Bijou” sounds a little like “jewel”, that’s because it is, in French! In fact, inspiration was drawn from its name and the shipping containers at the nearby maritime port to design its exquisite and multifaceted exteriors. We can’t help but imagine the many #OOTDs one can snap against the sleek juxtaposition of glass and steel!

That’s not all you can look forward to - this tranquil and serene space makes it a conducive environment for intimate catchups, small-group hangouts (of five), and some relaxing “me-time”. For us, Bijou is a temporary break from the hustle and bustle of life in the city; one that doesn’t require you leaving the country. What’s not to like? Here are a few of our favourites:

KIN ON CATCHING UP?

Singapore’s obsession with cafés is still going strong, and we’re thankful for that, for it’s what brought The Kins Café (#01-08) to Bijou. The specialty coffee café serves daily brunch, lunch, teatime, and dinner (but are closed on Wednesdays), with crowd favourites like their Scrambled Egg Croissant ($16), Big Brekkie ($22), and Lobster Mac & Cheese ($15) popping up across social feeds; just check their Instagram!

Their wide range of menu items makes it an excellent spot for small groups to hangout, with indoor seating for those who enjoy a minimalistic-industrial experience, and outdoor seating for those who prefer eating al-fresco amidst greenery. While you’re there, be sure to give their 5oz White Coffee ($5), White Cold Brew ($7), 7oz Matcha Latte ($6), or Kins’ Burnt Cheesecake ($8) a try! It might just be your new favourite.

Being healthy or fit isn’t a trend, but a lifestyle. In fact, it’s probably one of the best investments you can give yourself, which is what Lotus Yoga (#01-03) is founded on—to help improve one’s health (physical state) and wellness (mental wellbeing) through yoga, breathing, meditation, or pranayama.

The studio feels friendly and soothing, making it a great environment to learn a new exercise, train on your core, and be around fellow like-minded individuals. Plus, parents will be glad to hear that Lotus Yoga even offers classes for kids to help them better develop their stamina and balance!

EAT WELL AND BE HAPPY

You might already know this, but what you eat has a direct impact on your energy, mood, and health. Now that many of us are spending more time indoors, it’s all the more important to have food and ingredients that are both fresh and made of good quality in your home (and tummy).

For all that and more, swing by Eccellente by Hao Mart (#B1-01, opening soon) at Bijou. It carries a spectrum of international products at affordable prices, prepares in-store cakes and bakes, and even has a fresh seafood selection. Thinking of whipping up some healthy dinner or hosting a handful of close friends? Eccellente is worth checking out.

When you want a reminder that Singapore is truly a green city, go for a walk at any one of these five parks: Kent Ridge Park, the Southern Ridges, Labrador Nature Reserve, Mount Faber Park, or West Coast Park. All of these are only a short commute from Bijou, which means you can get your caffeine fix and hit the trails right away.

Whether it’s fresh air you need or a change of view from all that time spent #WorkingFromHome, the deep forest greens and clean, fresh air within these nature trails will be a definite mood booster and brighten your day. Start mapping them out and adding them to your calendar!

2020 has made many of us stay and work from home a lot more while having much lesser social interactions or exercise. But that doesn’t mean we can’t continue living life to its fullest. Instead, it means we need to find new ways to hit pause, take a breather, and spend quality time with those we hold closest—all while wearing a mask to stay safe!

Whether you’re working in the vicinity and need to pick up groceries, studying all day and need a good workout session, or craving for brunch on the weekend, bookmark this hidden gem —and stay tuned for more.
