Our 10th baker at Baker X @ Orchard Central is Arc-en-ciel, operating from 1 July to 7 August 2022. We spoke to the founder, Jiawen, to find out more about her baking journey. 

Jiawen took the conventional route of education — graduating from a local university and getting a corporate job in line with her studies. She did corporate marketing for 6 years before stumbling upon her love for baking. To her, baking meant the simple pleasures of making someone happy by baking them something sweet and homemade.

She then enrolled herself in At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy to professionally learn the craft and science of pastry. After graduating from pastry school, she worked for a couple of restaurants and cafes to further hon her skills and over the years, she was intrigued by the world of mousse cakes — their cloud-like airiness and basis of taste blew her away.

Jiawen decided to start Arc-en-ciel in end 2020 with great hope to share her passion and love for the world of sweets with everyone.
 

Being a part of Baker X @ Orchard Central

It was a dream opportunity for Jiawen to have a shopfront and bigger kitchen space that will allow her to interact with her customers and for her to push her boundaries to grasp where her production threshold is. The project will also be able to bring insights on how a retail business work versus a home-based set up.

Arc-en-ciel will be offering individual cakes portions and whole cakes in previously sold-out flavours as well as all new flavours inspired from a recent trip to Paris. Each of their cake has a ‘name’ that’s inspired from an experience with a close friend, relative or a cake from travels abroad.

There will be a total of 12 flavours available — 6 flavours from 1 to 22 July and another 6 from 23 July to 7 August. 

Some of the mousse cakes to look out for are Dalí, for the chocolate lovers; Denise, for the Yakult and grapefruit lovers; Laila, for those who loves everything matcha; and Melissa, for those who loves mango pomelo sago.

 

About Baker X @ Orchard Central

 

Baker X @ Orchard Central is a project to give budding home-baking entrepreneurs the opportunity to trial with a physical outlet and scale their business.

 

Through this initiative, Far East Organization aims to encourage the entry of new brands and enhance the business ecosystem in Singapore by providing customers with more choices and encouraging greater diversity.

 

Bakers work in a fully equipped baking studio and café, a physical space provided to them at no cost, over a period of 2 to 6 weeks to bake and sell.
