Love For Wagashi 

 

Our 31st baker at Baker X @ Orchard Central is Love For Wagashi, operating from 2 June to 18 August 2024. We spoke to founder, Dionne, to find out more about her journey.

Dionne, a frequent visitor to Japan (several times a year!), stumbled upon captivating photos of traditional Japanese Nerikiri 練り切り in 2020. Intrigued by their delicate beauty, she was curious as to what they might taste like. But to her surprise, these treats were nowhere to be found in Singapore.

Dionne then embarked on a mission to recreate these exquisite wagashi by following traditional production methods of making white and azuki bean pastes, a process that proved to be both laborious and demanding. After months of dedicated effort, with countless trials and errors, her perseverance paid off. As word of her creations spread, orders began flooding in.

This outpouring of enthusiasm fuelled Dionne's vision. By early 2021, "Love For Wagashi" was born, a concept driven by a passion to share these beautiful, handcrafted confections with her local community. Every piece is meticulously made from scratch using only the finest ingredients.

Japanese Nerikiri captivated Dionne with its exquisite designs, a true testament to the artistry of wagashi. Since founding Love For Wagashi, a dream has blossomed: to offer the unforgettable experience of having Nerikiri freshly-made and served on the spot, so that customers are able to enjoy the intended ideal texture.


Beyond Nerikiri, Dionne is passionate about sharing the beauty of of Japan’s traditional culture, by offering different kinds of wagashi that are uncommon in Singapore.

About Baker X @ Orchard Central

 

Baker X @ Orchard Central is a project to give budding home-baking entrepreneurs the opportunity to trial with a physical outlet and scale their business.

 

Through this initiative, Far East Organization aims to encourage the entry of new brands and enhance the business ecosystem in Singapore by providing customers with more choices and encouraging greater diversity.
