DECORATE WITH STATEMENT ACCESSORIES

The bed may be the centrepiece for most hotel rooms, but what distinguishes a room are the decorative elements. In the same way that many hotels communicate their brand image through decor pieces, you can also project your personality into your bedroom with accessories. Whether it’s a favourite piece of artwork or a vintage chest of drawers you inherited from Grandma, these little details are the finishing touches your bedroom needs to personalise your style and individuality.

INTRODUCE MOTIFS

Prints and patterns can give character to interiors. They are also often used to enhance a visual theme. Apply wallpaper to only one wall to make it a focal point. The other walls should be kept clean. Carpets with motifs are another easy way to add interest to a room.

PLAY WITH GEOMETRY AND COLOURS

Emulate the look of a sleek, stylish and modern hotel room by choosing furniture with clean lines and curves. Stick to a simple but striking colour scheme, such as pairing a neutral or monochromatic palette with bold splashes of colour — white, grey and black go well with primary colours like red, yellow and blue. For instance, contrast shiny black granite flooring with an armchair and carpet in acid red.

PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHTING

Lighting can dramatically affect how you feel. Warm lights create a cosy ambience and are recommended for relaxation spaces such as lounges and bedrooms. Light bulbs that emit cool, white light have a colour temperature rating of 5,000K and above, while those that emit warmer light have lower ratings. Besides colour temperature, the type and location of the lights are also important. Concealed or recessed ceiling lights are common in hotel rooms, as they provide effective yet unobtrusive ambient illumination. Also, layer your lighting by using other sources of illumination, like table and floor lamps. They add dimension and personality to a room. Finally, don’t forget to install dimmers, so you can adjust the light’s brightness according to your mood.

INVEST IN QUALITY MATERIALS

If you are drawn to the minimalist aesthetic of Nordic or Japanese design, the three words to keep in mind when designing your bedroom are Simple, Functional and Organic. Avoid plastics and veneers — use high-quality natural materials that bring out the design, feel and functionality of fixtures and furnishings. Solid wood, for example, is both beautiful and durable. Not only does natural wood grain have a timeless charm, it also evokes a sense of cosiness and harmony with nature. Wood is also suitable for a wide variety of applications, from lattice panelling to storage furniture.
